Alivardi Khan recognized the importance of promoting trade and encouraged merchants-Indian as well as foreign-to carry on trade in Bengal. He, however, did not allow the French and British merchants to fortify their factories in Chandemagore (now Chandannagar) and Calcutta (now Kolkata), respectively.
