Sadao put the American POW on his boat on the shore, with food and extra clothing in it, advising him to row to the little island not far from the coast. It was so near the coast that the authorities had left it unfortified, which meant no one lived on the island because it had submerged in a storm. Tom could live on that island until he saw a Korean fishing boat pass by, which would take him to safer shores. Such an act of Sadao demonstrates that he valued the sanctity of human life over patriotic fervour for his nation.
