Subject: Declining Reading Habits Among School children: A Growing Concern
Sir/Madam,
Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I wish to express my deep concern regarding the dwindling interest in reading among today's students. As the Head Librarian of Happy Children’s School, I have observed a significant decline in the frequency of library visits and book borrowings, with children increasingly gravitating towards digital distractions over the printed word.
The importance of reading cannot be overstated. It is not merely a tool for academic success but a gateway to empathy, imagination, and critical thinking. Regular reading enhances vocabulary, improves concentration, and provides a broader perspective on the world – qualities that are essential for the holistic development of a young mind.
To revive this dying culture, we must take collective action. Schools should introduce ‘DEAR’ (Drop Everything and Read) sessions, while parents must set an example by reading at home. Furthermore, organising literary festivals, book fairs, and interactive storytelling sessions can make reading feel less like a chore and more like a joyful adventure.
I hope this letter serves as a wake-up call for educators and parents alike to prioritise and nurture the habit of reading in our children.
Yours sincerely,
Ishit
Head Librarian
