The man is clever, persuasive, patriotic and courageous. He uses his intelligence and words effectively to win the Sergeant’s sympathy and escape from danger.
The Sergeant is dutiful, thoughtful and humane. Though he is a police officer, his old patriotic feelings are awakened by the man’s words and songs. In the end, he chooses humanity and sympathy over strict duty.
Both characters show that patriotism and human understanding can strongly influence a person’s decisions.
