Sardeshmukhi was a tax equivalent to one-tenth (10%) of the land revenue collected by the Maratha rulers. It was levied as an additional surcharge over the regular taxes, such as Chauth. Maratha leaders claimed this right based on their position as the hereditary ‘Sardeshmukhs’, or the supreme heads of revenue administration for the region.
