With clean hands or gloves, inspect the tongue’s colour, surface texture and size. Ask the person to touch the roof of the mouth with the tongue tip to inspect its underside, then protrude the tongue to examine its upper surface and note any unusual swelling, discolouration, grooves or sores. Seek medical advice for abnormalities.
