उत्तर १

1. Relief

  1. Population is densely distributed on flat plains and gentle slopes.
  2. This is because such areas are favourable for the production of crops.
  3. In these areas, it is easier to build roads and develop industries.
  4. The mountainous and hilly areas tend to be less populated.
  5. If means of livelihood are available, population can be concentrated in few such areas. e.g. Dehradun, Leh, etc.
  6. Thus, it can be concluded that plateaus or mountainous areas are less populated than plains.

2. Climate:

  1. Extreme climates such as very hot or cold deserts or regions with very heavy rainfall are not suitable for human habitation and hence they have less population.
  2. Areas with an equable climate, where there is not much seasonal variation, attract more people e.g. Mediterranean regions.
  3. In cold climates, only people like the Eskimos and Lapps, who are highly adapted to such climates, can live.
  4. Vast equatorial areas of the Amazon lowland and Congo basin are very sparsely populated due to their unfavourable climate.

3.  Availability of water:

  1. It is the most important factor for life for all living beings, including man.
  2. So people prefer to live in areas where fresh or potable water is easily available.
  3. It is because of this, that river valleys and coastal areas are among the most densely populated areas of the world e.g. Nile valley and coastal plains of India.
  4. In deserts too, population is found near oases e.g. Phalodi from Thar desert and Al-Ahsa from Saudi Arabia

4. Soils:

  1. Fertile soils are important for agricultural and allied activities.
  2. Therefore, areas which have fertile loamy soils have more people living on them, as these can support intensive agriculture e.g. Flood plains of the river Mississippi, the Ganga, the Irrawaddy, the Yangtze
  3. Similarly, areas having Regur or black soils are also densely populated.
  4. The slopes and foothills of many volcanoes have high densities of population as their slopes are covered with fertile volcanic soil e.g. Slopes and foothills of volcanoes in Java, Japan, Sicily and Central America.

The distribution of the world’s population is fundamentally shaped by several key physical factors that determine the habitability and productivity of a region.

  1. Relief and Landforms: People prefer to live on flat plains and flat slopes because they are perfect for intensive agriculture, industrial expansion, and road construction. For example, the Ganga Plains are one of the world’s most densely populated regions. Mountainous places, such as the Himalayas or Andes, are infrequently populated due to their harsh topography, poor soil quality, and high infrastructural costs.
  2. Climate: Climate is arguably the most important aspect. Temperate or monsoon climates, which have moderate temperatures and ample rainfall, are popular tourist destinations. Extreme temperatures, on the other hand, discourage settlement since they make survival and farming difficult. Examples include the frigid Polar areas, the hot Sahara Desert, and highly humid rainforests.
  3. Availability of Water: Freshwater is essential for drinking, sanitation, irrigation, and manufacturing. People have historically and continue to reside in river valleys and coastal places with plenty of water. The Nile Valley in Egypt is a prime example of a high-density area surrounded by sparsely populated desert.
  4. Soil Fertility: Fertile, alluvial, or loamy soils support high agricultural yields, which can support huge populations. Fertile regions, such as the Nile delta or Java’s volcanic slopes, are more densely populated than those with leached or sandy soils that cannot support farming.
  5. Natural Resources: Mineral and energy resources can entice people to live in even the most hostile environments. Mining and industrial areas, such as the Katanga-Zambia copper belt and oil-rich Middle Eastern deserts, are seeing substantial settlement due to employment opportunities.
