She looked into nothing, barely able to understand what was going on around her. As a sign of thanks, she put up her hand. He looked into her eyes. It dawned on him who it was. The same eyes, though they are a little fuzzy and have crow’s feet around them. Yes, the mole on her face, her teeth, and the way her lips move. Mrs. Nair, I had you as a high school teacher! In this case, though? 

With a few coins spread out in front of her on a dirty cloth, she still put out her hand for me. As she tried to read my face, I could see her eyes pulling together.

She let out a slow sigh and said, “Shantanu’s 11th Science batch, 1999. “She spoke English in a pure way. The same tune, with clear phrasing and beautiful tonality. The same voice that held her students glued to their seats as she read verses, told stories, and played out scenes from Shakespeare, Shaw, and Galsworthy. “Mrs. Nair,” he said in a low voice. “How are you here?” She smiled ironically and put her hands up as if to show that God had planned this. They sat on the wall around the banyan tree while she told her story. He helped her get up. The collapse happened while she, her husband, and their children were enjoying the beauty of the hills. Mountain water began to rush onto the roads. They tried to grab each other, but the water was too strong and tore them apart. After the disaster was over, she was by herself. Some people did get away from the attack, but they were just as useless as she was. After a few days, she had to beg because she was hungry.

He could not hold back tears as he watched her sad face. Hope that she would be found by someone close to her still made her want to live. This is why she didn’t want to move into a rescue home. It was a little farther away from his house, so he told her to go there. She said no at first, but when he offered to set up a search to find the survivors who had gone missing, she changed her mind. 

Shantanu set up a place for her to stay in his outhouse. The place was cleaned, the furniture was dusted, and the rooms were set up so she could feel at ease. When she saw the trees outside, her eyes lit up. Lots of different colored roses, chrysanthemums, and flowers. She got up early the next day to take care of the garden. With hope in her eyes, a spring in her step, and a smile on her lips, she walked past each flower bed. He stood there with a smile on his face and looked out the window.
