Mary Kom was born in a poor family in Kangthei village, Manipur. Her parents were tenant farmers, and she helped them with farm work from a young age. She also went to school and first took part in athletics.

Inspired by Dingko Singh, Mary Kom chose boxing and trained very hard. In 2000, she began her boxing career by winning the Manipur State Women’s Boxing Championship. She later became a five-time World Boxing Champion, won a bronze medal for India at the 2012 Olympics, and became the first Indian woman boxer to achieve this. She is also the only boxer to win a medal in all six World Boxing Championships. Mary Kom is considered a legend of Indian sports and hopes to support women’s boxing in the future by becoming a coach.
