A food chain is the sequence of living organisms in an ecosystem where one organism eats another to transfer food energy. It begins with producers, usually green plants, and ends with top consumers that are rarely eaten. Each step in the food chain is a trophic level: producers at the first level, herbivores at the second, and successive carnivores at higher levels. Food chains usually have fewer than five levels and can be grazing or detritus types. Grazing chains start with green plants; detritus chains start with dead organic matter.
