Animals are hyper-immunized with antigens, and then their antibodies are extracted for use in medicine. Because the cells continue to produce a range of antibodies, the resulting antibodies are typically diverse. Because of this, the serum antibody preparation will not have the required specificity and cannot be used for diagnosis. However, new research avenues have been made possible by the introduction of monoclonal antibodies. Monoclonal antibodies are uniform immunological agents with well-defined specificity, making them easily and confidently used for screening and diagnosis.
