Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae, affecting both male and female genital organs. In males, symptoms typically appear 3 to 10 days after sexual contact and include intense burning during urination and a profuse yellowish discharge of pus from the penis. In females, gonorrhoea often remains asymptomatic, making it possible for women to unknowingly transmit the infection to sexual partners. When symptoms do appear in females, they may include pain during urination, frequent urination, and urethral discharge. The infection can spread to other body parts and, if untreated, may cause severe complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility in both men and women, and eye damage in babies born to infected mothers. Rarely, arthritis may also develop as a complication of gonorrhoea. Prevention includes practicing safe sex by limiting the number of sexual partners and using condoms. Treatment typically involves antibiotics such as a single injection of penicillin or oral administration of ampicillin, norfloxacin, or ciprofloxacin, especially for resistant strains.
