The Laxmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE), Gwalior was established by the Government of India on 17 August 1957. It was named after Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi, the brave heroine of the First War of Independence in 1857. The institution was established to promote physical education in India through degree and postgraduate courses.

Initially, it was affiliated to Vikram University, Ujjain, and later came under Jiwaji University, Gwalior. It became an autonomous college in 1982 and a Deemed to be University in 1995. It functions under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. LNIPE prepares highly qualified professionals in physical education, sports sciences and sports management. It also promotes research, provides vocational guidance and offers placement services.
