उत्तर

Urban settlement patterns in India and Brazil demonstrate a striking divergence in urbanization rates despite both being large developing economies. Brazil is heavily urbanised, with cities housing more than 85% of the country’s population, due to massive rural-to-urban migration that began in the mid-20th century. This has led to hyper-concentration of people in southeastern megalopolises like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, leading in deep socioeconomic divisions and the rise of informal settlements called favelas. In contrast, India is primarily rural, with only roughly 35% of the people residing in cities.

However, India’s urban population is huge and fast increasing, as seen by the growth of megacities such as Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata, as well as the proliferation of secondary towns. While Brazil struggles to manage its existing high-density urban infrastructure, India faces the huge task of developing new infrastructure to support a massive, continuing urban transition.
