The Sports Authority of India (SAI) was established as a society on 25th January, 1984, by the Department of Sports, Government of India, to promote sports. It was the successor organization to the IXth Asian Games held in New Delhi in 1982. The organization is responsible for preserving and utilizing resources on behalf of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
The Society for National Institutes of Physical Education & Sports (SNIPES) merged with SAI on 1 May, 1987, to promote and develop sports consciousness through an integrated approach. This included NSNIS Patiala and two LNCPEs in Gwalior and Thiruvananthapuram. In September 1995, LNCPE Gwalior became a “Deemed University” and separated from SAI.
