Can Jeans Help Us Breathe Easier?
Delhi’s busy roads and growing number of vehicles often leave the air hazy and unhealthy. Traffic fumes contain harmful pollutants that can worsen asthma and other respiratory illnesses. Could an everyday pair of jeans help tackle this problem?
Fashion professor Helen Storey and scientist Dr Tony Ryan believe it can. They have developed denim coated with tiny particles of titanium dioxide. When the particles meet air and light, they help break down harmful emissions. The pollutants are then washed away when the jeans are cleaned.
In an imaginary interview, Ms Storey explained, “We wanted to use clothing as a surface that can help purify the air.” Dr Ryan added, “If many people wear these jeans, they could act like walking air filters.”
The idea is exciting because people could contribute to cleaner air simply by walking. However, these jeans are not a substitute for reducing vehicle emissions or taking other steps to control pollution. They are an innovative way to combine science with fashion—and a promising reminder that small actions can support a healthier environment.
