उत्तर

Promotion on the basis of seniority provides the following benefits:

  1. Promotion decisions are easier when seniority is the basis. Every employee will know their position on the promotion list, and there will be little opportunity for favoritism or conflict. Seniority-based promotions are impartial and equitable.
  2. An employee's length of service is a good indicator of their experience. A senior employee must have attained a respectable level of job perfection since practice makes perfect. Seniority should therefore be acknowledged and rewarded.
  3. Employees stay with the company to advance in seniority when promotions are based on seniority. Their dedication and loyalty to the company have increased. They will probably have strong morale and minimal employee turnover.
  4. Seniority is preferred by workers and trade unions since it does not distinguish between people who are efficient and those who are not. It has no effect on their togetherness.

Promotion on the basis of seniority suffers from the following disadvantages:

  1. When seniority determines promotions, junior staff members are not motivated to improve. They are aware that until the seniors depart the company or are promoted, they will not have the opportunity to advance. The development of high-potential employees will be hampered by this. All they will do is wait till they are old enough to be promoted. This could result in inefficiencies.
  2. The most senior individual may not always be the most capable. Having gray hair does not necessarily indicate maturity or wisdom.
  3. Determining seniority is not always simple in practice. Seniority accumulation addresses issues related to the onset of seniority and the impact of service disruptions. Determining seniority will cause issues unless the guidelines are precise and unambiguous.
  4. Seniority-based promotion may ignore an employee’s performance, skills, and qualifications. A senior employee may not necessarily be the most efficient or capable person for the higher position.
