उत्तर

Estimation is the process of using sample data to estimate or predict the value of an unknown population parameter. It is an important concept in data analysis because collecting data from an entire population is often expensive, time-consuming, or impractical.

Importance of Estimation:

  1. Saves Time and Cost: It is easier and less expensive to collect data from a sample than from the entire population.
  2. Supports Decision-Making: Provides approximate values that help organisations make informed decisions.
  3. Enables Prediction: Helps predict population characteristics based on sample data.
  4. Improves Statistical Analysis: Forms the basis for hypothesis testing and confidence intervals.
  5. Useful for Large Populations: Makes it possible to analyse data when studying the whole population is impractical.

Example:

A company wants to know the average salary of all its employees. Instead of surveying every employee, it collects salary data from 200 randomly selected employees. The sample average is used to estimate the average salary of the entire workforce.
