Why did the nayakas continue with the building traditions of the rulers of Vijayanagara?

The nayakas (military chiefs who established independent kingdoms after the decline of the central Vijayanagara authority) intentionally continued and expanded the architectural styles of the Vijayanagara rulers for several reasons:

• Legitimising Sovereign Authority: By adopting the grand, familiar architecture of the Vijayanagara emperors, the nayakas sought to establish political legitimacy and position themselves as the true, rightful heirs to the empire’s glorious legacy.
• Proving Military and Economic Power: Constructing massive structures, particularly monumental temple gateways called gopurams (often referred to as raya gopurams), allowed the nayakas to visually signal their immense wealth, structural capacity, and independent military power to rival states.
• Religious and Cultural Patronage: The Vijayanagara kings were celebrated as supreme protectors of Hindu cultural and religious traditions. By continuing to build grand temple complexes, pillared pavilions (mandapas), and shrines, the nayakas earned the crucial support of local priestly classes and the devotion of common subjects.
• Aesthetic and Architectural Continuation: The local guilds of stone masons, artisans, and architects were already deeply trained in the distinctive Dravidian and Indo-Islamic hybrid engineering styles developed at the capital city. Continuing these techniques was a natural and practical progression for monumental stonework in South India.
