Why did the ‘Doctrine of Lapse’, become a political cause for the result of 1857?

According to the Doctrine of Lapse introduced by Lord Dalhousie, if any Indian ruler died without leaving a male heir, his kingdom passed over to the British. Due to the Doctrine of Lapse, many states like Jhansi, Satara, Jaitpur, Sambalpur, Nagpur, etc. were annexed by the Company. Apart from it, the Doctrine of Lapse was also designed by the British to take away the titles and pensions of the rulers of some states. This led to great resentment amongst the rulers. The rulers of these kingdoms thus rose in revolt against the Company.
