Joseph McCarthy was a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin who became infamous in the early 1950s for leading a campaign against alleged communists in the American government and other institutions. During the early Cold War, this time was known as McCarthyism and was marked by harsh investigations, charges made without enough proof, and a general fear of communists infiltrating society. In 1954, the U.S. Senate finally censured Joseph McCarthy due to the damage his actions caused to people’s jobs and reputations.
