The dominant soil developed on the Deccan Trap is black soil (also called regur or black cotton soil). It forms in situ by weathering of the basaltic (lava) rocks of the Traps. Black soil is deep, fine‑grained and moisture‑retentive, rich in iron, potash, calcium and magnesium, and is especially suited to crops like cotton (hence “black cotton soil”), sugarcane, groundnut and some cereals.
