- During British rule in India in 1798, Lord Wellesley introduced the Subsidiary Alliance as a diplomatic strategy. Under this system, Indian princely states were required to accept British forces within their territories and pay for their upkeep.
- In return, the British promised protection from external threats. The states were also forbidden from forming alliances with other foreign powers or maintaining their own independent military forces.
- This policy helped the British East India Company expand its control over large parts of India without direct annexation.
