Solidarity was a Polish trade union and social movement founded in 1980 at the Gdansk Shipyard under the leadership of Lech Walesa. It began as a workers’ movement demanding better working conditions and political reforms in communist Poland. It was the first non-Communist trade union in a Warsaw Pact country. It started as a labor movement demanding better working conditions, higher wages, and political reforms.
