- Inhalation: When the diaphragm contracts, it moves down and flattens. This expands the thoracic cavity, reducing the air pressure inside the lungs and allowing atmospheric air to rush in.
- Exhalation: When the diaphragm relaxes, it moves upwards back into its dome shape. This decreases the thoracic volume, increasing the pressure inside the lungs and forcing air out.
