Pyrometallurgy is the extraction of a metal from its ore by carrying out the reduction process at high temperature using a suitable reducing agent. The word comes from “pyro” (fire/heat) and “metallurgy” (extraction of metals). In this process, the metal oxide is reduced to the metal by carbon, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, or aluminium at elevated temperatures in a furnace.
