Plate tectonics is the theory that the Earth’s outer layer, called the lithosphere, is divided into large pieces called tectonic plates. These plates move slowly over the semi-molten layer beneath them. Their movement causes major changes on Earth’s surface, such as the formation of mountains, earthquakes, volcanoes and ocean trenches.
