प्रश्न
What is meant by the ‘loudness’ of a sound? How is it related to the intensity?

उत्तर
Loudness is an aural sensation, i.e., a physiological rather than a physical phenomenon. It increases with intensity but the relation between the two is not linear, i.e., the ear does not recognize a sound, having twice the intensity of another, as twice as loud. In fact loudness (L) of a sound and its intensity (I) are related as L = k log (I/I0). Here I/I0 is the intensity level of the sound or the ratio between its intensity I and the zero of intensity or the threshold intensity I0 and k, a constant of proportionality depending upon the unit chosen.

State one important property of waves used for echo depth sounding.
When sound propagates in air, it does not carry energy with it.
Explain the mechanism of the formation of a longitudinal wave when the source vibrates in the air.
Name and define the characteristic which enables one to distinguish two sounds of same loudness, but of different frequencies, given by the same instrument.
If the amplitude of a wave is doubled, what will be the effect on its loudness?

Give scientific reason for the following:
Windows sometimes rattle when the low notes of a pipe organ are sounded.
Name one main factor on which each character such as intensity, pitch, and quality of musical sound depends.
Three musical instruments give out notes at the frequencies listed below. Flute: 400 Hz; Guitar: 200 Hz; Trumpet: 500 Hz. Which one of these has the highest pitch?
Two waves of the same pitch have their amplitudes in the ratio 2 : 3.
(i) What will be the ratio of their loudness?
(ii) What will be the ratio of their frequencies?
