An abrasion indicates a break in the epidermis, the skin’s outermost layer. The surface layer, known as the epidermis, is composed of many skin cell sheets. Abrasions are more likely to occur in thin-skinned bony regions, such as the knees, ankles, and elbows, than in thicker, more cushioned regions. There may be dirt particles on the skin that has been scraped off by an abrasion.
