What is a null electrode?

If the electrode assembly is such that neither the metal atom (M) nor the ion (Mⁿ⁺) undergoes any change, i.e., no oxidation or reduction process takes place at the electrode, no potential is developed on it. Such an electrode assembly is called a null electrode.
