This period brought both difficulties and progress to the lives of people. At the same time, trade and handicrafts continued to grow, although much of the wealth went to the richer sections of society. The period also witnessed important cultural achievements, including the temples of Vijayanagara, Mughal monuments such as the Taj Mahal, and Sikh religious literature. However, practices like iconoclasm and the jizya tax caused hardship for many. Leaders such as Rani Durgavati, Maharana Pratap, and Guru Tegh Bahadur became symbols of courage and resistance.
