Marian and Freda are very different in temperament, yet they become companions through their shared love of playing school. Marian is quiet, serious and hesitant around other children. Because she is deaf and unable to speak, she finds it difficult to follow their games and conversations, and she worries that they are laughing at her. She often plays alone, but she is observant and deeply responsive to nature; its beauty gives her a peaceful world of her own. Freda, by contrast, is lively, confident and outgoing. She approaches Anne boldly and repeatedly asks to play with Marian. Even after learning about Marian’s disability, Freda does not turn away. She brings her dolls, joins Marian’s game and takes the role of assistant teacher. Marian is more inward and sensitive, while Freda is socially assured and persistent. Their differences do not prevent friendship; Freda’s kindness and willingness to include Marian help the girls enjoy one another’s company. Their final game shows that patience, acceptance and shared interests can bring very different children together.
