Advisory jurisdiction is the power of the Supreme Court to give its opinion on questions of law or fact referred to it by the President.

• Who may refer: Only the President of India can refer questions of public or constitutional importance to the Court for its opinion.
• Nature of opinion: The Court’s opinion is advisory only, it is not binding on the President or on any other authority.
• Importance: It helps the President (and the Government) by obtaining the Court’s legal view on difficult or important matters, promoting the correct interpretation of the law.
