उत्तर
- Arguments in Favour of Agricultural Subsidies:
- Subsidies reduce the cost of seeds, fertilisers, electricity, irrigation and other inputs for farmers.
- They are especially helpful for small and poor farmers who may not be able to afford expensive inputs.
- Subsidies can encourage farmers to increase agricultural production.
- They also help in maintaining food security by supporting the production of essential crops.
- During droughts, crop failures or low market prices, subsidies can protect farmers from serious financial difficulties.
- Arguments Against Agricultural Subsidies:
- Subsidies create a large financial burden on the government.
- Sometimes, richer and larger farmers receive more benefit than small farmers.
- Excessive subsidies for electricity, water or fertilisers can lead to overuse of natural resources.
- Subsidies may encourage inefficient farming practices if they continue without proper control.
- They may also reduce the money available for long-term improvements such as irrigation, research, storage and rural infrastructure.
In my view, agricultural subsidies should not be completely removed, because many farmers still need financial support. However, subsidies should be properly targeted towards small and needy farmers. The government should also spend more on irrigation, technology, storage, better seeds, agricultural research and market facilities. Hence, agricultural subsidies are useful when they support farmers who genuinely need help. Therefore, they should be well-targeted and carefully managed rather than completely abolished.
