Some desert plants have very small leaves whereas some others have only spines. How does this benefit the plants?

Deserts are well known for adverse conditions like scarcity of water. Plants growing in the desert adapt themselves to such adverse conditions. So they have very small leaves and in some others, leaves are modified into spines to prevent loss of water through transpiration.
