If used carelessly, social media can spread fake news, rumours and false information. This may create confusion, unfairly influence people’s opinions and sometimes cause conflicts. When people are unable to identify reliable information, they may make wrong or uninformed decisions and lose trust in democratic institutions. This can weaken democracy and responsible participation of citizens.
