प्रश्न
Riya is on a strict diet because she wants to stay healthy and prepare for her upcoming school sports competition. One evening, she opens the fridge and sees a big, delicious chocolate cake that her mom made for a family dinner the next day. She immediately feels the urge to eat it, but plans to eat it after the sports competition.
As per Freud’s theory, explain Riya’s behaviour in terms of id, ego and superego.

उत्तर
According to Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, Riya’s behaviour is the outcome of a dynamic interaction between the three personality components:
- The Id (Pleasure Principle): This is Riya’s intuitive part that feels an immediate “urge” to eat the cake. It seeks rapid gratification for its wishes, without considering consequences or reality.
- The Superego (Moral Principle): This represents Riya’s internalised values and ambitions, specifically her “strict diet” and desire to “stay healthy” during the competition. It acts as her conscience, encouraging her to do what is “right” for her long-term success.
- The Ego (Reality Principle): The ego acts as the mediator. It recognises both the id’s desire (the cake) and the superego’s constraint (the diet). It finds a realistic compromise: “I will eat the cake, but only after the sports competition.” This delays pleasure in order to satisfy both parties efficiently.
