Rising Prices: A Burden on the Common Man

Nalini

Prices of essential commodities have been rising continuously over the past two decades, causing serious hardship for common people. Though some economists view rising prices as a sign of development, the sharp increase in the cost of daily necessities has created stress and frustration, especially among the middle class and salaried groups. Their incomes do not increase in the same proportion as expenses, making it difficult to maintain a decent standard of living.

The prices of food grains, vegetables, petrol, cooking gas and transport fares are increasing regularly. At times, essential goods are not easily available due to hoarding and black marketing. Adulteration of food items further adds to people’s problems. While the rich can manage these rising costs, the poor struggle to survive.

Several factors are responsible for this situation. Inflation, overpopulation, faulty distribution systems and increased demand with limited production push prices upward. Natural disasters like floods and droughts also reduce food supply. Moreover, corruption and black money weaken the economy and contribute to price rise. The falling purchasing power of the rupee has made life even more difficult for the common man.

The government must take strong steps to control the rising prices of essential commodities, as price stability is vital for the nation. Strict action should be taken against black marketers, hoarders and profiteers. More fair-price shops should ensure proper distribution of goods. Food production must increase, and corruption, bribery and smuggling must be eliminated. Family planning should also be promoted to check overpopulation.

Students can help by reducing wastage and limiting their demands. With strong will and proper action, prices can be stabilised.

Let’s hope the government can reduce rising prices. The key is to have the appropriate intention and strong willpower. Recently, the government has implemented price controls to improve the country’s economy. The government’s efforts have been partially successful in controlling inflation.
