Achievements of the Janata Party Government (1977-79):
- The Janata Party Government cancelled many decisions taken by the previous government, such as media censorship and the National Emergency.
- It introduced constitutional changes to make it harder to declare an Emergency, suspend Fundamental Rights, and interfere with the independence of the judiciary.
- Nine state governments led by the Congress were dismissed, and fresh elections were conducted in which the Janata Party and its supporting parties won.
- Through the 44th Constitutional Amendment, the Janata government also made changes to the 42nd Amendment that had been passed during the Emergency period.
- The Janata government started the Food for Work Programme, which provided employment in rural areas by constructing roads, bridges, and canals.
- It also set up commissions for minorities and backward classes to improve the condition of the weaker sections of society.
