उत्तर

  1. The Humiliation in Jail: After the burning of the Christian church, Okonkwo and five other leaders are lured into a trap by the District Commissioner. They are imprisoned, handcuffed, and physically abused by the court messengers, who shave their heads and mock them. For a man like Okonkwo, whose entire identity is built on personal dignity and masculine honor, this public humiliation is an unbearable blow.
  2. The Final Act of Defiance: During a village meeting to discuss resistance against the white men, a group of court messengers arrives to order the gathering to disperse. In a flash of characteristic living fire, Okonkwo kills the head messenger with his machete. He expects this to be the spark that ignites a war of resistance among his people.
  3. The Realization of the Clan’s Softness: Immediately after the killing, Okonkwo realizes that the Umuofia warriors will not back him. Instead of charging the remaining messengers, the crowd breaks into “tumult” and asks, Why did he do it? This reaction proves to Okonkwo that the spirit of the clan is broken; they have become effeminate and will not fight for their traditions.
  4. Loss of Place and Purpose: Okonkwo’s greatest fear was always to end up like his father, Unoka, a man without titles or respect. By killing the messenger and seeing the clan’s refusal to fight, he knows he will be hanged by the white man’s law. Rather than face a shameful execution at the hands of the strangers, he chooses to take his own life.
