The first headline refers to the serious danger faced by tigers because of poaching. In places such as Sariska Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan, heavy poaching caused the local tiger population to disappear by 2005. Later, tigers were brought from Ranthambore and reintroduced into Sariska, along with stronger protection and monitoring.
The second headline shows the success of tiger conservation in India. Through Project Tiger, protection of habitats, anti-poaching measures, scientific monitoring and better management of tiger reserves helped the population increase. India’s estimated tiger population rose from 1,411 in 2006 to about 3,682 in 2022, meaning that the country more than doubled its tiger population over this period.
Thus, the change from the first headline to the second shows that proper protection, strict action against poaching and conservation programmes can save an endangered species and help its population recover.
