Wastewater management in Arcata in California is an example of wastewater treatment in an integrated manner, by utilising a mix of artificial and natural processes. The cleaning of wastewater occurs in two stages. First process includes the conventional sedimentation, filtration and chlorine treatment of wastewater, which removes a lot of pollutants. But this water still contains pollutants like dissolved heavy metals, which are removed by the next process. Next process is an innovative approach in which biologists developed a series of 6 connected marshes over 60 hectares of marshland through which wastewater flows and gets purified naturally. In each marshland appropriate plants, algae, fungi and bacteria were seeded, which neutralise, absorb and assimilate the pollutants. As the water flows through these marshes, it gets purified naturally. Friends of the Arcata marsh-FOAM is a group of citizens that are responsible for the upkeep and safeguarding of the biodiversity of this project. These marshes not only purify water but have good biodiversity and so constitute a sanctuary too. It is habitat for a number of birds, animals and different types of fish. |
- The sequence of wastewater treatment at Arcata project was
- sedimentation-chlorinationfiltration-marshlands
- sedimentation-filtrationmarshlands-chlorination
- sedimentation-filtration chlorination-marshlands
- marshlands-sedimentation-chlorination-filtration-marshlands
- In Arcata project, the heavy metal pollutants are removed from wastewater by
- anaerobic bacteria of treatment plant
- algae, fungi and bacteria of marshlands
- aerobic bacteria of treatment plant
- chlorine-treated marshlands
- The wastewater treatment project at Arcata is called an integrated project because
- it includes conventional treatment along with the use of fish in marshlands.
- it includes conventional treatment along with use of algae and fungi in marshlands.
- water gets purified naturally in marshlands only.
- it is a sanctuary.
- What is the function of FOAM?
- to look after birds in the sanctuary
- to check working of wastewater treatment plant
- to safeguard biodiversity of the area
- to check flow of water in the area
- When water passes through the marshlands, following pollutants get removed
- excess of carbon dioxide
- heavy suspended waste
- chlorine
- dissolved heavy metals
