Read the following poem and write an appreciation of it with the help of the given points in a paragraph format:       [5]

The Will to Win

If you want a thing bad enough

to go out and fight for it,

work day and night for it,

give up your time and your peace and your sleep for it

If all that you dream

and scheme is about it and life

seems useless and worthless without it

If you gladly sweat for, fret for and plan for it and lose

all your terror of the opposition for it.

If you simply go after that thing that you want with all

of your capacity, strength and sagacity, faith, hope and

confidence and stern pertinacity

If neither cold or poverty, famished or gaunt

or sickness or pain

of body and brain

can keep you away from the thing that you want,

If dogged and grim you besiege and beset it,

with the help of GOD you’ll get it!

The Will to Win

“The Will to Win,” written by Berton Braley, is a powerful motivational poem that emphasises the importance of relentless determination. The poem lacks a strict rhyme scheme, using a free-flowing, rhythmic style to build intensity. The poet effectively uses anaphora to list the necessary conditions for success and alliteration in phrases like “dream and scheme” to make his message more impactful and memorable.

The central theme is that success is the result of unwavering commitment rather than luck. Braley argues that if a person is willing to sacrifice their time, peace, and sleep to pursue a dream, they have the “will” required to win. The poem acknowledges that the path to success is filled with obstacles such as poverty, pain, and sickness, but insists that these can be conquered through “tenacity” and hard work.

In conclusion, the poem serves as a guiding light for anyone striving to achieve their goals. It teaches that when an individual pursues their vision with all their strength and faith, they create their own success. By linking human grit with divine support, the poet conveys that persistence ultimately leads to victory.
