उत्तर

I studied two autobiographical works:

  • Mahatma Gandhi – The Story of My Experiments with Truth
  • Jawaharlal Nehru – An Autobiography

Both leaders played important roles in India’s national movement, but they described their lives and the freedom struggle differently.

Mahatma Gandhi’s Autobiography:

Gandhi’s autobiography mainly describes his personal life, moral beliefs and experiments with truth and non-violence. He explains how experiences in India, England and South Africa shaped his ideas. He believed that political struggle should be based on truth, non-violence and self-discipline. Gandhi also believed that ordinary people, including peasants, workers and women, should take part in the national movement. His writing is very personal and often discusses his mistakes, beliefs and efforts to improve himself.

Jawaharlal Nehru’s Autobiography:

Nehru’s autobiography gives more attention to politics, society and the national movement. He describes his experiences in the Indian National Congress, his imprisonment and his involvement in the struggle against British rule. Nehru was influenced by socialism and modern ideas. He was concerned about poverty, economic inequality and the condition of peasants and workers. His autobiography therefore presents the national movement not only as a struggle for political freedom but also as a struggle for social and economic change.

Comparison of their views:

Basis Mahatma Gandhi Jawaharlal Nehru
Main focus Truth, non-violence and personal morality Politics, society and economic change
Method of struggle Politics, society and economic change Supported mass struggle and strong political organisation
View of society Stressed simple living and village life Favoured modernisation, science and economic development
Role of people Wanted peasants, workers and women to join the movement Also believed that ordinary people were essential to nationalism
Writing style Personal and moral Political and analytical
Common aim Freedom from British rule Freedom from British rule

Differences in their views:

  • Gandhi placed greater importance on non-violence, morality, and village-based life.
  • Nehru was more attracted to socialism, science and modern industrial development.
  • Gandhi often explained politics through his personal beliefs and experiences.
  • Nehru examined the national movement primarily from political, social, and economic points of view.

Similarities:

  • Both strongly opposed British colonial rule.
  • Both believed that the national movement should involve ordinary Indians.
  • Both spent time in prison because of their role in the freedom struggle.
  • Both wanted India to become independent and more just.

Conclusion:

The two autobiographies show that nationalist leaders could share the same goal of independence while having different ideas about how India should develop. Gandhi focused more on truth, non-violence and village society, while Nehru focused more on socialism, science and modern development. Studying both helps us understand the different ideas that existed within the Indian national movement.
