The short story ‘Old Man at the Bridge’ by Ernest Hemingway is stark and powerful. It takes place during the Spanish Civil War. An old man sitting on the side of a pontoon bridge and a soldier tasked with monitoring the enemy’s progress are the main characters. As people run away from the coming fascist army, the old man stays still because he is so tired and worried. He tells the soldier that he has to leave his home in San Carlos to take care of his family pets: two goats, a cat, and four pairs of pigeons. He doesn’t really care about the war or his own survival. What he really cares about is what will happen to these creatures. He fears they won’t be able to survive without his daily care.

It's a great example of minimalism because the story conveys the terrible nature of war through simple, almost sparse dialogue. In his writing, Hemingway shows how the big picture of military manoeuvres is different from the suffering that goes on in the background. The soldier knows that the old man doesn’t have a bigger political goal or mission; he’s just a victim whose only concern is the health and safety of his animals. The irony in the title, ‘The Bet,’ lies in the fact that the old man's ‘bet’ was that his animals would somehow make it through the shelling, but he and his animals are unlikely to make it.

The most emotional part of the story is when the soldier tries to get the old man to keep moving to safety, but the old man is too sad to listen and keeps worrying about the pigeons in their cages and the cats’ ability to take care of themselves. Hemingway leaves the reader with a disturbing image: the old man is trapped by his own compassion and sense of duty. The story is a powerful criticism of war because it cuts through the rhetoric of conflict to show how helpless each person is in a fight that destroys everything they care about, leaving them with only their own compassion.
