Whispers in the Stone: A Morning at Kanheri

Most brochures describe Kanheri as a set of two-thousand-year-old rock-cut caves, but they can’t capture the way the air turns cool and earthy the moment you step into the cliff’s shadow. Climbing those rough-hewn stone stairs, the frantic noise of Mumbai fades, replaced by the crunch of gravel and the distant calls of forest birds.

Walking through the small monastic cells, I felt a strange connection to the monks who once meditated here, overlooking the vast, green canopy of the park. My favourite moment was simply sitting on a sun-warmed ledge at the summit; with the city’s hazy skyline visible in the distance, the silence of the caves felt profound. It’s a place that humbles you, reminding you that while the world rushes forward, these stone walls have been quietly watching over the forest for millennia. If you visit, don't just sightsee; take a quiet moment to listen to the stillness.
