The chromosome theory of heredity was put forth by Walter Sutton and Theodore Boveri. The observations that led Sutton and Boveri to develop the Chromosomal Theory of Inheritance are given below.
- In diploid cells, genes and chromosomes are found in pairs.
- During gamete production (meiosis), homologous chromosomes split apart.
- The number of chromosomes is returned to diploid status by fertilization.
