The latitudes, which are called Doldrums, lie between 0° and 5° North and South of the Equator. This region is also known as the Equatorial Low Pressure Belt or Inter-tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). It is characterized by intense heating and rising air, causing a zone of calm with very little surface wind, hence called “doldrums”, meaning dull and calm.
