Justice D. Y. Chandrachud

Justice Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud is one of the eminent judges from Maharashtra. He was born in Mumbai and had a distinguished career in law. He served as a judge of the Bombay High Court and later became the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court. In 2016, he was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of India. He became the Chief Justice of India in November 2022 and retired in November 2024.

As a Supreme Court judge, Justice Chandrachud made important contributions to Indian law and justice. He was part of several landmark judgments concerning fundamental rights, privacy, equality, liberty and human dignity. He played an important role in recognising the right to privacy as a fundamental right. He also supported gender equality and the rights of individuals to make personal choices.
