1. Retirement: The permanent withdrawal of an employee from active service in an organisation, typically after reaching a specified age or completing a set number of years of service. Two types of retirement are as follows: 
   1. Compulsory retirement: The contract with an employee specifies the retirement age or superannuation age. Employees retire from service on attaining the age of superannuation. Such a retirement is called compulsory retirement.
   2. Voluntary retirement: A business may provide generous incentives to departing employees before they reach the age of superannuation if it has excess personnel. Some workers may choose to retire voluntarily to take advantage of these programs. This type of retirement is referred to as a Golden Handshake or voluntary retirement.
2. Layoff: The term “layoff” refers to “the failure, refusal, or inability of an employer to hire a worker whose name appears on the muster rolls of his industrial establishment and who has not been laid off, due to a lack of coal, electricity, or raw materials, or due to stockpiling, machinery failure, or any other reason.”
3. Retrenchment: In a continuing business, retrenchment refers to the permanent termination of an employee’s employment for financial reasons. Retrenchment does not occur when employees are let go due to disciplinary action, extended illness, retirement and superannuation, agreement expiration, or business closure. The reason for the termination is worker redundancy.
4. Resignation or Quit: Resignation is the act of an employee choosing to leave their position on their own initiative. Both voluntary and involuntary resignations are possible. An employee who resigns voluntarily may do so for a variety of reasons, such as illness, marriage for female employees, a better job offer elsewhere, or dissatisfaction with the company.
